關於中秋節的實用單字和例句

又是中秋節了。中秋節的英文：Mid-Autumn Festival，或者可以簡單說成Moon Festival。

一提到中秋節，直覺想到月餅，英文就是mooncake。月餅有很多的口味　（flavor），包括紅豆沙（red bean paste）、 棗泥（date paste）、 蓮蓉（lotus seed）、鳳梨（pineapple）和鹹蛋黃（salted yolk）。完整的句子可以這麼說：

The mooncake flavors include red bean paste, date paste, lotus seed, pineapple and　 salted yolk.

不知各位怎樣過中秋節。一般而言，過中秋節的方式主要是吃月餅、柚子和賞月。英語這樣說：We celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival by eating mooncakes, pomelo and watching the full moon.

中秋節，月圓人團圓，這是華人的習俗。對華人而言，中秋節是家人團聚(family reunion) 的日子，英文這樣說：For the Chinese people, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a day for family reunion.

在台灣，中秋節晚上也會吃烤肉 (barbeque)。英語這樣說：In Taiwan, people have barbeque at the Mid-Autumn night.

談雨

最近常下雨，關於下雨的一些英文，該怎麼說呢？

如果今天走在路上，突然開始下雨，我們會說「要下雨了」，英文就是：

The rain is coming down.

如果只是說現在正在下雨，很簡單：

It is raining now.

雨下得很大，有兩種說法：

The rain is heavy.

It is raining hard.

請不要說：The rain is big.

如果要形容傾盆大雨，有這幾種說法：

It is raining cats and dogs.

The rain is pouring down.

The rain is falling in torrents.

說明：「pour」有傾倒的意思。「torrents」有洪流的意思。

雨下得小，英文這樣說：

The rain is light.

真得很小，可以加一個very:

The rain is very light.

也可以這樣說：

It is raining lightly.

同樣的，不要說：The rain is small.

如果雨越下越大，英文就這麼說：

The rain is getting heavier.

與變小了，還是用light這個字：

The rain is getting lighter.

說明：heavy變heavier，light變lighter，都是形容詞比較級的變化。

要表示，雨已經下了一段時間，英文的說法是這樣的：

It has been raining for a week.

(雨已經下了一星期了。)

It has been raining since last week.

(雨從上星期下到現在。)

雨要停了，英文這麼說：

The rain is letting up.

雨停了，這麼說：

The rain has stopped.

  

下雨天，有人喜歡，有人不喜歡。

問人喜不喜歡下雨天，這麼說：

Do you like rainy days?

喜歡，這麼說：

I like rainy days.

不喜歡，這麼說：

I don’t like rainy days

或

I hate rainy days.

當雨再下的時候，就視情況，套用這些句子練習吧！

九月政爭

這篇文章應該在前年九月PO出的，但是存在草稿裡就忘了，今天看到，還是把它PO出來，請大家回想一下前年九月的馬王政爭，但這裡不談政治，純粹是討論相關的英文而已。如果要回應的話，也請針對英文學習的本身，拜託切勿討論誰是誰非。

請看這兩個字： speaker、lobby 。
大家想到了甚麼？喇叭裝在大廳嗎？如果你能想到我要說的是什麼，表示你的英文程度蠻不錯的。為什麼把這兩個字擺在一起？好的，這兩個字和最近幾天的政壇風暴新聞有很大的關係。答案揭曉：院長、關說。先說speaker吧，它有演講者、(音響系統的)喇叭或演講者的意思。但另外一個意思是議會的議長，也叫speaker，無論是國會或地方的議會，議長皆用此字。有時候，大家會把這個字和｢發言人｣混淆，發言人的英文叫做spokesman。

好的，lobby除了指大廳外，另一個意思就是遊說，當動詞用。進行遊說的人，就是lobbyist。如果要更精確表示｢關說｣的話，可以在前面加上illegal，就是非法的意思。合起來是illegal lobbying。

例句：
The spokesman accused the speaker of illegal lobbying.
發言人指控院長關說。

The speaker denied involvement in illegal lobbying..
院長否認涉及關說。

當時的事件，讓我將這兩個字聯想在一起。事情就是這樣的。

科技新寵

我們的生活已經離不開網路或科技產品，有幾樣東西我們經常會聽到、看到或使用，它們的英文該怎麼說呢？

1.      物聯網：這個名詞最近在媒體上挺夯的，到底是甚麼意思呢，簡單的就是將許多的設備透過網路的方式加以連線，形成實體物品之間的網路，例如你家的冰箱、電視、微波爐等物品，都加以連線……大概是這樣的意思。它的英文是the internet of things，也可以縮寫成IoT。注意，中間的o通常是小寫。這是未來的重大趨勢，將會改變我們的生活方式。英文這樣說：The internet of things will change our lifestyle. 許多人看到了其中很多的商機，英文可以這麼說：There are many business opportunities in the IoT.

2.      無人機：這玩意兒，不再只是一種軍事武器，如今也是小孩的玩具。很多的空拍畫面也是無人機弄出來的。它的英文，比較正式的說法是UAV，全名是Unmanned Aerial Vehicle。但有一個比較通俗的單字，drone，原本是雄蜂或懶人的意思。無人機有大有小，一般市售供消費者使用的是採用直升機的方式，而且通常有四個螺旋槳，它有另一個名稱，叫做quadcopter。quad有四個的意思，是拉丁文的字根，copter，就是直升機helicopter這個字的簡寫。可能很多人也想買一台來玩玩，但問題就是，無人機的操縱會需要花很多時間學嗎？Do I have to spend a lot of time learning how to fly a drone? 也許你的兒子要你買一台給他當生日禮物。My son is asking me to buy him a quadcopter for his birthday.

3.      穿戴式裝置：手機的發展已經到了瓶頸，很多大廠開始搞出所謂的穿戴式裝置，英文叫wearable device，也可以直接說wearable。它們大多數的型態就像是手錶一樣，除了有一些手機的功能外，也有一些其他的功能。如果你有一具這樣的裝置，要向你的朋友炫耀，可以這麼說：This wearable device can measure your blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature.就是說，它可以幫你測血壓、心跳和體溫。儘管媒體對於這樣的產品時有報導，但到目前為止，我還沒有看到有人帶這種穿戴式裝置，英文這樣說：I haven’t seen anyone wearing a wearable device yet.

4.      自拍：拿著手機對自己拍照，相信很多人都應該玩過吧。自拍的英文是什麼？其實很簡單，只有一個很簡單的字：selfie，就是self後面加ie這兩個英文字母。拍一張自拍照，英文是take a selfie。手機上的相機可以自拍，那種就是selfie camera。自拍棒，或自拍桿，英文可以說selfie pole或selfie stick。

蘇迪勒颱風留下的傑作之一就是那兩個彎腰郵筒，想在那兩個郵筒旁自拍，英文這樣說：I will take a selfie beside the two bent postboxes. 如果有人在臉書上PO太多自拍照，你覺得他/她自戀，英文這樣說：You are simply a narcissist because you post too many selfies.

5.      表情符號：你有LINE嗎？有的話，一定會用到表情符號的。那麼，表情符號的英文該怎麼說呢？有一個字，看起來不像英文：emoji。看這個拼法，這是哪裡的土話？這是從日文來的，漢字寫成 「絵文字」（えもじ），它的讀法，很接近把M.O.G這三個英文字母連續讀出。emoji有收錢的，也有免費的，如果你知道有某個網站可下載免費的，英文這樣說：You can download free emojis on this website. 如果是會動的emoji，前面加animated這個字，它有動畫的意思。你會用動畫的emoji嗎？英文這樣說：Do you use animated emojis?

2014年NBA總冠軍戰

NBA總冠軍賽如火如荼進行，熱火、馬刺兩隊使出渾身解數拚戰，今年到底誰能贏得最後勝利呢？

總冠軍賽採7戰4勝制，英文叫做 best-of-7 series. 整句話這樣講：The NBA Finals is a best-of-7 series.

如果要問別人：｢你認為哪一隊會得總冠軍？｣英文可以這樣說：Which team do you think will win the title? 這裡的title 指的就是總冠軍的這個頭銜。如果你很肯定其中的一隊會贏，可以說：I think the Spurs/Heat. 如果要強調誰的贏面比較大，可以這麼說：I think the Spurs/Heat have (has) a better chance. 請注意，說NBA的任何一個隊名，前面都要加 the 。

先前的戰績是一比一平手，英文是：The series is tied 1-1。目前戰績是馬刺二比一領先熱火，英文是：The Spurs lead the series 2-1.

第三場馬比賽當中，全場最亮眼的就是馬刺的Kawhi Leonard，他的優異表現是馬刺贏球的重要原因。他的表現，英文可以這樣形容：Kawhi Leonard played especially well. He scored 29 points. (Kawhi Leonard 打得特別好，他得了29分)。

輸球的熱火隊，必須重整振作，贏下第四場，英文這樣說：The Heat must regroup and win game 4.

林來瘋(二)

豪小子又回台灣了。曾締造所謂林來瘋的Jeremy Lin，在台期間的一舉一動也都是媒體的焦點。今年來回台期間，教會為他舉辦了一場類似佈道大會的活動，讓他從個人信仰的角度來談他的NBA生涯，以及他對於人生的態度，和對基督的見證。在此使用的影片是去年的他的一場佈道大會，為什麼不用今年最新的？因為歌星唱歌的時間就佔掉一大半，而且去年講的內容比今年還要充實一些，所以用的是去年的啦！

狂犬病 Mad dog disease

狂犬病又出現了，引起一陣騷動，好在目前都只是所謂的鼬獾感染此病。那麼，狂牛病的英文怎麼說呢？您可能會想會不會是一個拼法很特殊的醫學名詞，其實很簡單，只要按照中文字一個字一個字翻回英文就可以了。狂=mad，犬=dog，病=disease. 狂牛病= mad cow disease。

其他可以套用這個公式的疾病還包括：狂犬病=mad cow disease；口蹄疫=foot mouth disease； 禽流感=bird flu (或avian flue) ；豬流感=pig flu (或 swine flu)。簡單吧？

這類的疾病都屬於流行病，英文是 epidemic。當這類的疾病開始傳開時，就會用｢爆發｣來形容，而這個｢爆發｣，英文是outbreak。疫情的爆發，英文可以說成 epidemic outbreak。 


目前的狂犬病只在動物之間傳播，英文可以這樣說：
Currently the mad cow disease is being spread among animals.

如果不希望狂犬病會傳給人，英文可以這樣說：
I hope the mad cow disease will never be spread to humans.

這些流行病都有相關的疫苗，英文叫vaccine。

每次當有一種流行病的威脅傳出時，往往聽到媒體報導，目前庫存的疫苗不夠，英文可以這麼說：
There are not enough vaccines in stock.

接種疫苗，英文就是 to get vaccinated。 

例句：People are advised to get vaccinated to prevent the             
            outbreak of this epidemic.
           人們最好能接種疫苗，以防止這種流行病的爆發。

棒球用語(三)

當打者揮擊投手所投的球時，被擊中的球會有幾種結果：

安打：

英文叫 hit，一壘安打叫 first base hit，二壘安打叫 second base hit，三壘安打叫 third base hit，也可以分別說成 single、 double
triple。如果指的是內野安打，就在hit 前面加一個infield。

例句：

1. The Dodgers need only a double to tie the game. 
     道奇隊只需要一支二壘安打就能追平比分
2. The whole team had only 2 singles in the game against the Reds   
     yesterday.
     全隊昨天在對紅人隊的比賽當中只有兩支一壘安打。

如果一場比賽當中，一直都沒有安打出現，英文就叫no-hitter。

例句：
 Wei-yin Chen had a no-hitter throughout 7 innings.
  陳偉殷投了七局都沒有讓對手擊出安打。 


全壘打：

英文叫紅不讓，對不起，是home run。也可以說成homer，而這個字也可以當動詞來使用。

陽春全壘打的英文叫 solo home run，二分砲叫 2-run home run，三分彈叫 3-run home run，滿貫砲叫grand slam。擊出全壘打，英文是hit a home run.


例句：
1. Jose Bautista hit a solo home run to tie the game in the 9th     
     inning.
     包提斯塔在第九局擊出陽春砲追平比分。
2. Manny Ramirez had 8 home runs when he played in the CPBL.
     曼尼在中職擊出了八支全壘打。
3. Michael Morse homered in the 7th inning to break the tie.
     默爾斯在第七局擊出全壘打，打破了平手的局面。

接殺：

滾地球(grounder )被接殺，英文叫 ground out。
平飛球(liner) 被接殺，英文叫line out。
高飛球(fly ball)被接殺，英文叫 fly out。

例句：
1. Jeter grounded out in his 4th at bat. 
    吉特第四次打擊時擊出滾地球被接殺。
2. Ad Gonzalez lined out to right fielder Choo. 
    Ad岡薩雷斯擊出平飛球被秋信守接殺。 
3. Furcal flied out to center fielder Campana.
    佛考擊出高飛球被中外野手坎帕納接殺。
     
界外(球)：

英文叫 foul ball 

例句：
He has hit foul balls in this at-bat.
他這次的打擊已經打出五次界外了。

界外球除了被守備的球隊接住以外，也有可能被看球的球迷接到。而球迷如果接住原本可由球員接住的球，原本可以判出局的球，卻變成界外球，保住打者的一線生機，有時也因此使戰局發生逆轉。

最有名的一次事件就是2003年的國聯冠軍戰第六戰，小熊隊原本只差五個出局數就可以挺進世界大賽，卻因為第八局的時候，有一位球迷Steve Bartman接住原本可由外野手Ｍosies Alou接住的球，使得小熊隊原本領先的局面在後來遭到逆轉，
並且輸掉後來的第七戰。在當年，小熊隊已經連續58年無緣世界大賽。

而Steve Bartman也就成為芝加哥的全城公敵。這次的事件被稱為Catching Hell。最上面的影片就是事情發生當時的情形。

The aliens 外星人

外星人近年來成為某些新聞談話性節目喜歡探討的議題。
外星人英文怎麼說？
基本上有幾個：1. alien; 2.ET (extraterrestrial ); 3.spaceman (也有太空人的意思) 
但最常用的應該是alien。

談到外星人，「是否見過」和「是否相信有」是大多數人會立刻想到的問題。如果要問別人是否見過外星人，可以這麼說：
Have you ever seen an alien?
如果要問別人是否相信有外星人，英文是這樣的：
Do you believe in aliens?

請注意，believe in 這個片語，基本上就是相信某種事物的存在，相信某種事物或制度的效果，對某個人物的信仰。
分別舉例：

Many people believe in ghosts.
（很多人相信有鬼）
Some governments still don’t believe in democracy.
（有些政府還是不相信民主）
I believe in Jesus Christ.
（我信仰耶穌基督）

當然，外星人是否真的存在，也是眾說紛紜，畢竟眼見為憑（Seeing is believing）有時候，媒體會報導某些人與外星人接觸的經驗 (alien contact experience)，至於是真是假，就憑個人判斷 (It's up to your judgement).如果覺得某人說的有據的，英文可以這樣說：

很多外星人研究的相關資料顯示，外星人的科技領先我們至少一千年，英文可以這樣說：

也有一種說法指出，現在地球的許多科技，其實是來自外星人的。英文是這樣子：

至於外星人住在哪裡，確實的位置我們目前無從得知，但知道他們住的地方距離我們許多光年。英文這樣說：

外星人到底長甚麼樣子？ (How do the aliens look like?)

一般的刻板形象是他們比較矮小，頭很大。英文這樣說：
The stereotyped image is that they are smaller in size and have very big heads.

好萊塢經常會拍外星人入侵地球的電影，｢入侵｣英文用 invade這個字。整句話英文這樣說：

Hollywood makes a lot of movies about the earth being invaded by the aliens.

希望那只是電影的情節而已，否則如果真有那麼一天，恐怕是世界末日了 (the end of the world)。

Sports widow 體育寡婦

愛看體育節目的已婚男士們，如果你們的太太不愛好此道，當你們在賽季時不顧一切地盯著螢幕，注意著每一秒的賽況時，被冷落的另一半，英文當中有一個名詞來形容她們，叫做sports widow。widow這個字是寡婦的意思。就是說，當你們太投入體育節目時，她們就好像沒了先生一樣。

例句： I become a sports widow during the NBA season.
（我在NBA賽季期間成了運動寡婦）

註：during後面的名詞可以用其他的運動項目代換。

例句：I become a sports widow during the World Cup.
（我在世足賽期間成了運動寡婦）
但男士們也有他們的苦，如果他們的太座熱衷於韓劇，那麼他們就是Korean drama widower。widower是鰥夫的意思。

例句：I’m a Korean drama widower almost every night.
（我幾乎每天晚上都是韓劇鰥夫）

平板電腦 Tablets

平板電腦的英文怎麼說？為什麼會Po這張照片？

事情是這樣的，平板電腦的英文是tablet。而摩西手上的法板，英文也是用tablet。所以有人腦筋一動，就做出這樣的合成照片。

Tablet這個字除了｢平板｣外，還有｢藥錠｣的意思。

平板電腦的另一個英文字是 pad，pad最初的意思是墊子，女性用的衛生棉也是這個字。


如今，有些智慧型手機越做越大，而平板的尺寸則比剛問世時縮小了一些，於是這兩者的界線已變得越來越模糊，英文可以這麼說：

這句話可以抓出一個句型來做練習，
